Educational Projects: University

Library West - University of Florida - Gainesville, Florida

Library West is the premier library collection for the University of Florida. This project added 60,000 gsf of new stack shelving and allows for more "people" space. Special attention was given to provide the proper environment for archival requirements of the books. . The project also includes the complete interior remodeling including 117,000 gsf of existing space to use current use patterns. This significant project expands the library to serve 50, 000 students.  The remodeled portion creates a clear, strong sense of entry featuring a 2-story entry lobby, a pair of escalators and a patron elevator leading to the 2nd floor circulation desk.   It expresses invitation, excitement and intellectual stimulation and provides external views of content and function.

This project is LEED Gold Certified through the U.S. Green Building Council.

Powell Structural Materials Testing Laboratory - Gainesville, Florida

This Design/Build project houses the Center for Infrastructure Protection & Physical Security (CIPPS) for the College of Engineering. The building consists of a concrete testing area, several offices, an instrumentation area, necessary support spaces and a storage area.

The concrete testing area requires a heavily reinforced 3-foot thick concrete floor foundation to support the testing of large-scale structural elements as well as strong walls for lateral load testing.

The interior has two 25-ton cranes for moving concrete test forms and has a clear height of 36 feet to the crane.

The building is sited to easily receive deliveries of 40-foot long beams via tractor-trailer truck.

This project is LEED Certified for New Construction through the U.S. Green Building Council.



Weil Hall - University of Florida - Gainesville, Florida

This five story, 155,000 sq. ft. building was originally built in 1949. The renovation and remodeling includes teaching labs, research labs, academic offices, multi-media lecture halls and classrooms. It is also being designed to segregate student and faculty activities. A revised rotunda will direct all classroom functions to the second floor and the Dean's suite will be located on the third floor. This project also included the installation of state-of-the-art mechanical, electrical and fire protection systems and improved handicapped accessibility.

Simmons Career Center - Plant City, Florida

This ESE/Teen Parent/Career Center is the first of its kind for Hillsborough County School District. Occupants range from autistic, teen, parents, vocational/technical and culinary arts students. The ESE/Special Needs students range from 3rd grade through high school.

The plan is designed around a courtyard that separates the disciplines while giving the opportunity for them to come together in order to learn from each other.

This energy efficient and hurricane hardened design received the Merit Award for Architecture from AIA Tampa Bay and recognition in the National School Board Association Exhibition of School Architecture.

Beth Shields Middle School Prototype - Ruskin, Florida

This Middle School is a 120,000 gsf project on a 37-acre site built in conjunction with a new county Library, on an adjacent parcel. Amenities include 62 classrooms, a media center, computer lab, food service area, gymnasium, administration suite, and storage facilities.

This prototype design has been repeated for the School District of Hillsborough County as Nancy Bartels Middle School.

Liberty Middle School - New Tampa, Florida

Conceived as the first community use school for Hillsborough County, Liberty Middle School is a 120,000 gsf project sharing a 140 acre site with Freedom High School and a 40 acre park, for the City of Tampa. The site also contains 35 acres of wetlands. The community school concept allows both the park and the schools to share athletic facilities at different times during the day, maximizing the use of the facilities. The facilities include a joint use kitchen, auditorium and central chiller plant, resulting in a more economical design.
